Thiscompellingtaleofloveandbetrayal,setintheupperEgyptiancountryside,followsthestoryofAmnaassheplotsherrevengeontheengineerwhodestroyedherfamily'shonor. ------------------------------------ ThisisawonderfulEgyptianfilmthattheaverageWesternaudiencenevergetsanopportunitytosee.It'sreallyashameasthemoviegivessomuchinsightintothecultureandthestory,thoughvery"foreign"featuressomecharactersyoucaneasilyrelatetoancarefor. ThefilmisagreatfilmthatshowstheclashbetweenveryconservativeIslamicvaluesandtraditionsandthoseofamoremodernMoslemworld.Thisclashisextremelypoignantandseemstoillustratethatthespiritofthelawandtraditionismuchmoreimportantthatthetraditionsthemselves. Thefilmbeginswithawomanandhertwoadultdaughtersfindingoutthatthefatherismurdered.Itseemsthatthismanwascommittingadulteryandsomeonetookituponthemselvestopunishhim.However,insteadofjustpunishinghimandbeingdonewithit,thefamilyPatriarch(theuncle)tellsthewomentheymustleavethevillageandfendforthemselveddd!ItISN'Tbecausetheydidanythingwrong,butthattheywouldbeareminderoftheman'sinfidelity.So,inhistwistedthinking,hecastthesewomenoutwithnoregardtotheirfuturejustsothefamilyAPPEARSgoodandjusttooutsiders!!Theladiesappearfortunatewhentheyarriveatafar-offtownbecausethetwoyoungestareabletogetjobsasmaids.However,theoldestdaughteriseventuallyseduced(orpossiblyraped)byheremployerandthefamily.Themotherisextremelyupsetbythisandcontactsthepatriarchtoaskforhisassistance.The"kindly"uncleagreestotakethembacktotheoriginalvillage,butontheway,hemurdersthe"fallensister"!Theinequityofherdeathandtheemployerneverbeingpunishedisamajorthemeofthefilm.Whilesomeinthemale-dominatedsocietymightapproveofthis,theunjustnessofthemurderisdefinitelycalledintoquestion.And,sincenooneseemstocare,theyoungestdaughter,Amna,decidestorunfromherUncle'shomeandfindtheoldersister'sex-employerandexactjustice!Allthisoccursjustinthefirsthalfofthemovie!TherestistheslowlyunfoldingofAmna'srevengeandtheunexpectedtwistsandturnstheplottakesalongtheway.And,fortunately,thisisNOTaby-the-numbersmovie--itisdefinitelyNOTpredictableorwrittenforadumbaudience!Thisisanexceptionallywellwritten,actedanddirectedfilm.Inaddition,thecinematographyisexquisite.Theonlydownside,andthisisaveryminorquibble,isthatthemusicisabit"tinny".
